Budget cuts at Paraguay’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) have left more than 400 small and medium farmers in the department of Paraguarí without state access to quality potato seed, putting the season at risk. Paraguarí is one of the country’s key growing zones, where hundreds of families depend on the crop as their main income. The support programme that previously supplied subsidised or free high-reproduction seed has been cut, leaving those producers without the promised material and hundreds of prepared hectares at risk of going unplanted inside the optimal agrotechnical window; family farms lack the capital to buy imported seed potatoes on the open market.
